In the market town of Bedale, North Yorkshire, cricket has been part of the community since 1828. Today, Bedale Cricket Club fields teams across every level — from juniors at Under 9, 11, 13, 15, and 19, to a thriving ladies section and three senior men’s teams. It’s a true family club, where young players grow up alongside older generations and friendships last well beyond the boundary rope.
But as the club expanded, keeping everyone connected became increasingly difficult. Messages flew around in group chats, emails, and social media threads. Parents, players, and coaches were often left checking multiple platforms to stay up to date.
“It has made communication much easier,” says Paul Croft, Club Secretary and Lead Junior Coach. “Before Spond, we were using lots of different ways to communicate — messages, emails, Facebook — and it got messy. Now we have the whole club using the same system.”
That change came in January 2022, when Bedale Cricket Club decided to move its operations to Spond, unifying the way it managed communication, membership, and payments.
One Platform for Every Team
With more than 150 members across its junior and senior sections, Bedale needed a platform that could handle the club’s growing complexity while remaining easy to use. The Spond app and Spond Club now provide that foundation — a single system that connects everyone, from coaches and parents to players and volunteers.
“Having everything in one place works best for us as a sport,” Paul explains. “It’s made life easier for everyone — players, parents, and organisers alike.”
Through Spond’s event and availability tools, coaches can now post training sessions, fixtures, and matchday details instantly, while parents can confirm attendance in just a few taps. The result is smoother planning, fewer missed messages, and better visibility across every team.
Simplifying Payments and Membership
Beyond communication, the real breakthrough for Bedale has come through Spond Club’s payment and membership management tools. Collecting annual fees used to be a time-consuming process involving multiple spreadsheets and manual follow-ups. Now, it’s all handled seamlessly online.
“We’ve used the club platform this year, and it’s made collecting fees and tracking who has paid much easier,” says Paul. “We can also collect all our membership information in one place. It’s simple, transparent, and saves us a lot of time.”
The club estimates saving around 10 hours of admin time each month, allowing volunteers to focus on coaching, development, and community outreach instead of chasing payments.
Supporting Safeguarding and Inclusion
For a club with a large number of junior players participating in senior cricket, Spond’s built-in safeguarding features have been especially valuable. The platform allows young players to take part in group communication while ensuring their parents remain included and informed.
“As a cricket club with under-18 players playing senior cricket, we really like the safeguarding aspect,” Paul says. “Spond lets young players be part of the group but includes the parents too. That transparency is really important to us.”
The ability for everyone to see upcoming events, who’s attending, and what’s expected has fostered greater trust across the club.
“It links everyone together,” Paul adds. “There’s transparency — everyone can see everything they need.”
A Game-Changer for Grassroots Sport
Bedale Cricket Club’s adoption of Spond has changed how the entire organisation operates. The platform has made communication faster, payment collection simpler, and administration far more efficient. It’s also brought a new level of consistency and professionalism to how the club interacts with its members.
“It’s saved us time and made it easy for players and parents throughout the club as everyone uses the same system,” Paul explains. “We’d definitely recommend it to other clubs and sports — and we already have.”
With a legacy stretching back nearly two centuries, Bedale Cricket Club is proof that tradition and technology can go hand in hand. By embracing Spond, they’ve ensured that their future is just as strong as their past — organised, inclusive, and ready for whatever comes next.
