£100 Million Boost for UK Grassroots Sports Funding

11/04/2025

Children’s grassroots football team training on upgraded pitch supported by sports funding

Grassroots sport across the UK is set to benefit from a major uplift thanks to a £100 million sports funding package announced by the Government. The investment, delivered in partnership with football foundations and associations across all four nations, will support upgrades to hundreds of local sports facilities during 2025/26.

From new and improved pitches to changing rooms, clubhouses, floodlights and goalposts, this sports funding is aimed at enhancing the experience of players, coaches and volunteers across the country.

Sports Funding to Target the Areas That Need It Most

The grassroots sports funding initiative will focus on deprived areas and under-represented groups, including women and girls, ethnic minority communities, and disabled players. This forms part of the Government’s Plan for Change, which aims to remove barriers to physical activity and improve long-term health outcomes.

Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy announced the package at Bonnyrigg Rose Community Football Club in Scotland. She highlighted the need to ensure that wherever people live, they have access to safe, high-quality sports facilities that encourage participation.

Multi-Sport Investment Across the UK

The £100 million in new sports funding will be distributed across the UK:

  • £82.3 million for England, including £2 million of new investment in the current year

  • £8.6 million for Scotland

  • £6.1 million for Wales

  • £3 million for Northern Ireland

At least 40% of the funded projects will feature a multi-sport offer, ensuring local communities have access to a range of activities beyond football, such as cricket, rugby and basketball.

This multi-sport approach means the sports funding will go even further in helping people find a sport that suits them, boosting participation and improving inclusivity.

The Impact of Grassroots Investment

According to the FA’s 2024 Social Return on Investment report, grassroots football alone contributes over £11.8 billion to the economy, including £3.2 billion in NHS savings. With improved facilities, the sports funding package is expected to enhance physical and mental health while supporting the development of skills, confidence and community connections.

High-quality local sports facilities are essential to removing access barriers, particularly for under-represented groups. This is a key aim of the programme and one that is reflected in how the funding will be distributed and delivered.

Who Can Apply for Sports Funding?

The new sports funding programme will be delivered through existing national bodies:

  • Football Foundation in England (working with The FA and Premier League)

  • Cymru Football Foundation in Wales

  • Scottish FA and partners in Scotland

  • Irish FA in Northern Ireland

Applications are open now in England via the Football Foundation. In Wales, the Cymru Football Foundation is managing submissions. Application windows for Scotland and Northern Ireland will follow shortly. The first successful applicants will be announced by summer 2025.

Clubs, community groups and local authorities are encouraged to apply to take advantage of this new sports funding stream, particularly those in areas with the greatest need for facility upgrades.

Managing Growth with Spond

As grassroots clubs prepare to welcome more players and make the most of improved facilities, effective team management becomes even more important. That’s where tools like Spond come in.

Spond is a free-to-use app that helps grassroots organisers save time and reduce admin. Whether it’s managing training sessions, sharing updates with parents, or collecting payments, Spond makes it simple to keep everything in one place. With new sports funding boosting infrastructure, digital support from platforms like Spond ensures clubs can operate smoothly behind the scenes too.

As more young people get involved in sport thanks to better facilities, Spond helps coaches and volunteers stay focused on what matters—getting more people active and keeping sport enjoyable for everyone.

A New Future for Sports Funding

This new UK grassroots sports funding has the potential to create lasting change. By investing in both infrastructure and community, the UK is giving grassroots sport the platform it needs to thrive—now and for future generations.
