Hampshire Cricket is on a mission to streamline its operations and bring greater efficiency to cricket club management. Faced with a system heavily reliant on email, the organisation struggled with time-consuming processes for managing thousands of members. Seeking a more intuitive system, the organisation turned to Spond, a platform designed to simplify club and team management through centralised communication, event planning, and financial tracking.
Established in 1863, Hampshire is one of the most high-profile of the 18 first-Class counties in England and Wales. Based at the renowned Utilita Bowl Cricket Ground, it boasts a rich history, having secured the County Championship titles in 1961 and 1973, along with 13 limited-overs trophies, most recently the 2022 Vitality Blast.
Stuart Chatfield, Player Pathway Operations Manager at Hampshire Cricket, shared the club’s journey into the modern age of cricket club management: “We knew we needed a solution to bring efficiency and move into the digital age. We initially tried Microsoft Teams, but it didn’t meet all our needs. When someone recommended Spond, we decided to give it a go, and it’s been a real game-changer.”
Simplified Cricket Club Management
Following a trial with junior teams, Hampshire Cricket expanded Spond’s role to manage winter training for the 2024-25 season, bringing consistency across teams. Thanks to Spond’s ease of onboarding, Hampshire Cricket has been able to rapidly improve the efficiency of cricket club management across the organisation. Stuart also highlighted the onboarding support Spond provided: “The team at Spond are incredibly supportive, helping us get set up and guiding us through the whole process.”
Spond’s all-in-one platform has enabled Hampshire Cricket to consolidate essential functions like registration, payments, and communication, significantly reducing administrative complexity. Before adopting Spond, the club relied on separate systems that created inefficiencies and added to the workload. Now, with everything centralised, Spond saves substantial time and effort across all areas of cricket club management.
“With Spond Club, we’ve been able to set up registration forms and manage payments all in one place,” Stuart explained. “Previously, instalment payments were managed manually through bank payments, which made tracking difficult. Looking ahead, we’re excited to introduce structured payment options, such as instalments for our winter training fee and other events. This shift is a big step forward for us, as having everything centralised makes it much easier to monitor payments and keep things running smoothly.”
Efficient Member Management and Safeguarding
Hampshire Cricket currently manages over 2,200 members on Spond, although this number is expected to stabilise at around 1,600 once the annual selection process completes. Spond’s member management features have been invaluable, allowing the club to temporarily deactivate accounts for members who don’t progress (so they are ready if they decide to try again next year), update profiles, and maintain consistent communication across all squads.
“Spond makes it much easier to handle sign-ups, update profiles, and track communication,” Stuart said. “It’s also essential for GDPR compliance and safeguarding. Spond lets us set age limits and restrict certain data, simplifying our safeguarding responsibilities—critical for effective cricket club management.”
Scheduling with Spond’s Availability Feature
Spond’s availability request tool has transformed scheduling for Hampshire Cricket, simplifying the process of organising training sessions and matches. “Availability requests are a lifesaver,” said Stuart. “They keep everyone updated on schedules, making it far easier to manage events across large groups.” Another standout feature is the integration with the ECB’s Play-Cricket platform, allowing fixtures to sync seamlessly into Spond. This feature will save hours of manual entry, further streamlining operations and enhancing efficiency.
Challenges and Future Training Plans
Adopting a new platform inevitably comes with challenges, and Hampshire Cricket has focused on easing parents into the Spond-verse. “Getting parents used to the platform has been gradual,” Stuart noted. “But the reduced admin burden and improved communication make it worth the effort. Our next goal is to get coaches fully trained to use all of Spond’s features.”
To support this, Hampshire Cricket is launching a training phase for coaches, equipping them with skills for attendance tracking and event scheduling, which will help them make the most of Spond’s capabilities.
Cricket Club Management with Spond
Through its adoption of Spond as its cricket club management platform, Hampshire Cricket has not only enhanced operations but set a benchmark for efficient and modern cricket club management. Centralising processes, improving financial management, and creating safer, GDPR-compliant structures have proven invaluable as the organisation continues to grow and evolve.
“We’ve come a long way with Spond,” Stuart said. “We hope they keep developing the platform further so we can keep using it for years to come.”
