Hayley's Triumph: A Testament to Resilience and Determination

Last week’s WellChild Awards 2023 was a showcase of remarkable spirit and resilience, and taking her place at the heart of the ceremony was Hayley, the exceptional winner of the “Inspirational Young Person 12-14yrs” category, proudly sponsored by Spond.

Hayley’s story is one of unwavering determination and positivity. Despite her daily challenges, which include living with cerebral palsy diplegia, a displaced hip, and a host of complex medical needs, she has not only managed to face each day with optimism, but has also made significant contributions to others.

Strength and Resilience

Despite already combining her education with daily physiotherapy sessions, Hayley’s accomplishments are numerous: from raising over £100k for charity to singing in a choir and excelling in sports. Hayley has secured numerous medals in wheelchair basketball, is on the England pathway for Great Britain, plays for the Sheffield Steelers, and participates in wheelchair rugby for GB’s development team, Leicester Tigers, and Yorkshire Lions Wheelchair Rugby. Her advocacy for sports is so compelling that it even found a platform on the CBeebies TV channel.

Her mantra, “I’m not disabled, I’m differently abled,” resonates with everyone who has had the privilege of meeting her, making her an apt choice for an award supported by Spond. Hayley’s mother, Susan, who nominated her, couldn’t have put it better, “I’m in awe of her. Hayley is an amazing and inspirational child who always promotes wellbeing. She has faced tremendous adversity with positivity, fun, and encouragement.”

Trine Falnes, CEO of Spond, reflecting on the event said, “Hayley’s indomitable spirit aligns deeply with Spond’s ethos of promoting inclusivity in sport. Her journey serves as a powerful reminder of the potential within every young individual.”

Transforming Lives

Speaking at the awards, Prince Harry told the audience: “For nearly 20 years, WellChild has been transforming the lives of children and young people across the UK, providing critical care that prioritises the physical, mental and emotional wellbeing of these individuals and their families.”

The WellChild Awards 2023 was an unforgettable event, and Spond feels honoured to have sponsored a category that celebrates young individuals like Hayley, whose stories inspire and make a difference to everyone involved in grassroots sports.
